Why sod vs. seeding?
Within a few hours, turfgrass sod transforms a yard from bare soil to a living carpet of grass with mature density and a solid root system. And, it performs like an investment. Landscaping with turfgrass sod instantly increases the market value of the property from 5%-10%. Lawns established with turfgrass sod are an immediate joy and source of pride, while lawns started with seed, sprigs, or plugs take from 2 to 3 years of constant effort and are a frequent frustration. In an instant, turfgrass sod creates a soft, clean and safe playing surface for children, lawn games, and family entertaining. But most importantly, it cleans the air and helps recharge our groundwater supplies. Grass blades take in carbon dioxide and the worst atmospheric pollutants and gives back pure oxygen. Turfgrass sod is one of nature's finest, least expensive filters, working to improve the environment. Because turfgrass is fully mature the day it's delivered, it can immediately control erosion even on steeply sloped areas, as it sinks down roots very rapidly.
With its lower maintenance in the beginning, instant lawn rather than waiting for months for a green yard, increases the value of a home instantly.
How much sun does it need?
Our sod needs at least 50% of the daily sunlight.
When should I aerate and what is its purpose?
Aerating should be done once a year generally in the spring. Aerating is pulling plugs of sod/soil out of the ground allowing air to get into the subsoil to get to the root of the plant and stop compaction. Once aerating is complete, fertilize your lawn and water immediately; this will get fertilizer to the root of the plant as well. Aerators can be rented at the local general rental store.
When should I de-thatch my lawn and what is its purpose?
De-thatching should be done once a year in the early spring, usually in April. If your lawn gets too green and too thick, it's too late in the spring to de-thatch. De-thatching allows you to get the thatch out of the grass. This allows air to get at the base of the plant and gives it a healthy start in the spring after a long winter.
