MYTH:
When school starts and the leaves start to turn to the dazzling autumn colors, it’s too late in the season to sod.
FACT:
Autumn is the perfect time of year to lay sod in your yard!
Most people think that it’s too late to sod in September or October. B&B Hoffman Sod is here to tell you to why fall is actually a great time of year to sod your lawn.
Ideal Temperatures for Growth
During the hotter months of summer, sod can struggle with stress and dehydration in the intense heat. The milder temperatures of fall allow the sod to focus on establishing a strong root system rather than coping with extreme conditions.
Moisture and Rainfall
Autumn typically brings more consistent and moderate rainfall compared to the sweltering, unpredictable summer showers and storms. This natural watering helps to keep the soil moist, crucial for new sod’s roots to dig deep into the soil, leading to a stronger and healthier lawn.
Reduced Competition from Weeds
Weeds are generally less aggressive in the fall. With fewer weeds to compete with, new sod can establish itself more effectively. Many common weeds start to die as the temperatures drop, giving your new sod a better chance to thrive without the stress of competition.
Improved Soil Conditions
As summer turns into fall, the soil tends to cool down and maintain a more favorable temperature for sod roots. Cooler soil temperatures can promote root growth and reduce the risk of soil-borne diseases, which are more prevalent in the heat of summer.
Less Stressful Lawn Care
Cooler weather and reduced evaporation rates mean less strain from dehydration, heat and high water needs. (And less time spent working on the lawn!)
Ready for Spring
When the snow melts and temperatures rise, your lawn will already be established and ready to thrive. Early fall sodding ensures that your lawn will have a head start on being lush and vibrant throughout the growing season.
Tips for Fall Sodding
- Timing: Aim to lay sod in early to mid-fall, you never know what the weather will bring. You can lay sod through October and into November so long as the ground isn’t frozen!
- Preparation: Properly prepare the soil by clearing debris, leveling it, and ensuring it’s well-aerated.
- Watering: Keep the sod well-watered, especially during dry spells, to help it establish strong roots.
- Maintenance: Reduce foot traffic for 1 week, or until you mow, to reduce shifting on the newly installed rolls.
